Does “Insured for $38,000” Mean Anything?

Why an insurance value isn’t a reliable guide to what you should pay.

Sellers sometimes brag that their car is “insured for $38k.” Insurance agreed values are set with the insurer and don’t reflect market value. They may include accessories or an inflated figure to reduce premiums. Ignore the insurance number and research market value using multiple sources. Base your offer on condition, kilometres and comparable sales.
