QLD Private Car Sale Contract Guide

Understand the paperwork needed to legally buy or sell a car privately in Queensland. Don’t get caught out by missing forms or dodgy clauses.

Essential Documents

  • Queensland Transport’s Sale of Vehicle Contract: Use the official contract template available on the QLD Transport website. It spells out buyer/seller details, VIN, price and declaration of encumbrance.
  • PPSR Certificate: Attach your PPSR search to prove there’s no finance owing and that the vehicle isn’t written off.
  • Safety Certificate (Roadworthy): Required in QLD for registration transfer. Make sure it’s less than 2 months old.
  • Transfer of Registration Form: Signed by both parties and submitted within 14 days.

Writing a Fair Contract

Ensure the purchase price, odometer reading and any known defects are listed. Include a clause that the buyer has inspected the car and accepts it “as is.” Both parties should keep a signed copy. Take photos of both parties’ ID for record‑keeping.
