The 21 checks, before you start
These are prompts for your own observations, not findings about a car. Leave anything you cannot check unresolved and arrange an independent mechanical inspection where needed.
Exterior
Walk-around condition, visible damage, tyres and glass.
- Panels line up and paint looks consistent
- No visible rust, dents, or scratches
- Lights and indicators all work
- Tyres look decent and wear evenly
- Windscreen and mirrors aren't damaged
Interior
Cabin controls, warning lights, trim condition and odours.
- Windows, locks and mirrors work
- Air con blows cold
- No warning lights stay on
- Seats, seatbelts and controls work
- No water damage, mould or bad smells
Mechanical
Start-up, driveline feel, braking and obvious leaks.
- Engine starts cleanly, no odd noises
- Transmission shifts smoothly
- Brakes feel firm, no pulling
- No fluid leaks visible under the car
Test Drive
Steering, braking, vibration and behaviour under load.
- Steering is straight, no vibration
- No unusual noises while driving
- Acceleration and braking feel normal
Documents
Seller identity, rego, service records, safety certificate and PPSR.

- Service history available
- Safety certificate current or discussed
- PPSR check completed
