Private Car Buying Checklist

Buying privately? Use our five‑step checklist to protect yourself from scams, hidden defects and bad deals.

Your Five‑Step Checklist

  1. Verify the Seller: Ask for ID, proof of ownership and a current registration certificate.
  2. Inspect the Car: Look for mismatched panels, fluid leaks, unusual wear and signs of flood damage.
  3. Check the Papers: Run a PPSR search, compare the VIN across documents and get a mechanical inspection if in doubt.
  4. Test Drive: Drive at different speeds, check brakes, steering, transmission shifts and unusual noises.
  5. Negotiate & Pay Safely: Use our negotiation scripts, pay after signing the contract and transferring registration. Never pay in cash.
